[DSL] Southern Michigan Congestion

$

Has anyone else started seeing (more) congestion in the Southern Michigan area? My DSLAM is very oversubscribed, but lately the congestion is 'different' and way worse, happening even at off-peak times (I got a speedtest.net result for 1 mbit on my dual 3 mbit lines at 8 am on a Sunday). During peak times it's even worse (https://www.dslreports.com/speedtest/1551252) getting less than .5 mbit per line, sometimes as low as .1 mbit. Poking around with traceroute, it seems that the hops from Muskegon to Chicago or Muskegon to Ashburn (both where FTR has POPs) are high latency. Has anyone else noticed this, or is it just my specific area?

[Internet] New Frontier Terms includes "data usage charges" wording...

While this may just be good ol fashioned paranoia, I happened to notice that the new terms and conditions contains a section "NETWORK MANAGEMENT, USAGE LIMITATIONS AND FAIR USE POLICY", which worries me a little given all the data caps being imposed everywhere else, especially when reading section it clearly states: "Reasonable network management practices that Frontier may adopt include, but are not limited to, the following: (i) data usage charges; (ii) a modification of a customer's serving facility or service technology; and/or, (iii) a modification of or a limitation on a customer’s data throughput speed or data consumption. We're not a super heavy user, but I'd guess we're in the 500gb/month range; so I'm not sure what they think is excessive and this seems pretty open ended to me. I think I'll opt out of the new terms for now as it appears that the old terms were better for me and all. For those wondering, you just need to call 1-855-520-7258 within 30 days and opt out to only be subject to the old terms. Here is a link to the old terms: https://frontier.com/docs/terms/terms_frontierbroadband_termsandconditions_011415.pdf Here is a link to the new terms: https://frontier.com/docs/terms/terms_frontierbroadband_termsandconditions_121015.pdf If anyone catches anything else, I'd really be interested in bringing it to light here. This doesn't seem very pro-consumer to me.

[U-Verse] Issue with Frontier TV App Version: 2.2.0 (Connecticut Customers)

I had some issues logging on to the Frontier TV App version: 2.2.0 yesterday (Error Code: HTTP_500). The App let me send the technical information to Frontier. According to the response (see screenshot) , they are having issues in Connecticut with IOS devices. Today I'm able to logon on and use the in-app remote (so far) and I'm already running the latest version 2.2.0. Still can't view anything without getting the "This content is currently part of your subscription package" error. I'd be curious to know if other Connecticut folks using IOS devices are having issues (or not) and what Apple device and IOS version are in use.

[FIOS] Frontier FIOS TV conversion to H.264 MPEG4?

Anyone have information about a possible MPEG4 transition on Frontier FIOS TV? It's happening with other carriers, Verizon included. Wondering if/when I will be affected. I am a HTPC user; I use Windows Media Center and SiliconDust HDHomerun tuners with cablecards, Ceton Echo and Xbox 360 extenders. I have been hearing about issues from folks using similar gear in the Comcast environment that is moving to MPEG4.

YO, hello! This is relating to the 7550 Frontier Modem (Yes, we trashed it XD)! When multiple users attempted to stream video, or play a game the modem would die! We got the Frontier man out (Car Man) and he got us a different modem! BUT WHY did this happen? Any ideas? (This happened over the summer of 2015)

Frontier usenet settings?

So I'm a dinosaur who still reads Usenet. I have two accounts, ES and Frontier. ES seems to be fine. Frontier was working fine until yesterday. Now it keeps asking for user/pass. Enter them and it says they are invalid. Tried wiping out the account and starting over with the same result. I have tried a couple other readers with similar results. Is there a way to find out if the server is actually up? (news.frontiernet.net)

[DSL] Still no service at 5+ months

Still no service. The technician called today and told me that all 'repairs' have been done, the new fiber optic line connected at both ends and turned on - and still nothing. Still no service. I just sent off another flurry of e-mails to the frontier higher-ups asking why things still are not working. I am still not happy.

Anyone in Western Washington having Fios issues since the storms?

So during the week and into today, we've had some powerful windgusts. This problem started a few days ago. I specifically live in Marysville, Washington. I am not losing connection to my internet and we never lost power here and we have Fios. But when I run a simple tracert to google, it seems somewhere trying to get from Marysville to Everett it has a request times out. http://imgur.com/uvUrW1v Here is the image of the Tracert. Blacked out part of the first part since it has a first and last name. But you get the idea. Going from here to Everett it's getting a request timed out, which is essentially like it about to fail to load a page. My computer and laptop dont technically lose connection, but it still results the same -- Slow. It'll be on the brink of failing to load a page before it slowly apparently reroutes it's way there. On my Nintendo 3DS however, I do lose connection and I have to reconnect. Gaming is also unplayable because of the timeouts. As an avid online gamer, it's a big deal to me. (And even just browsing is getting annoying) I've tried all the basic things I can think of like flushing DNS, resetting IP, turn modem/etc on/off. But at the end of the day it seems since these storms it's struggling to specifically connect to Everett which is part of it's path. Wondering if anyone else is having these issues and if not, hopefully Frontier sees people north of Seattle are having problems.

[TV] Forgetful DVR

I've had this issue off and on for as long as I've been a FIOS customer, both when I was with Verizon, and still with Frontier. Surely I can't be the only one that experiences this so I thought I'd ask and see if anyone has a solution. My DVR periodically seems to forget that I have a series set to record. I'll go to the series manager and nothing has changed, the series is set to record and yet it will not show up in the scheduled recordings. It appears mostly random but it hit big on Sunday after the daylight savings time changeover kicked in. It unscheduled a bunch of series in my series manager and the same for the following week. The solution is to remove the series and re-add it. This reschedules them but this is VERY annoying as you know. I'm sure others have seen this too. Does anyone know of anything I can do to alleviate this problem?

[DSL] DSL Questions

Hello, after fighting the latest bout of packet loss (10-15%, can browse the internet but video streams and gaming are out of the question) I have decided to inquire and find out more about my DSL connection. Specifically, I'm looking for information on my transceiver stats, and whether there is anything that can be done to improve them. Without further ado, here are the transceiver stats. Left column is down, right is up. For the most part I've only had issues with down. DSL Speed (kbit/s): 1788 446 Margin (dB): 9.7 19.8 Line Attenuation (dB): 62.0 34.8 Transmit Power (dBm): 0.0 12.9 From what I have read, my downstream stats are pretty terrible and would explain the very regular network problems. I should note that we have a slightly older modem, a Westell 7500. We tried the 7550 (three of them actually) but had to downgrade because it couldn't handle the 12 devices we had in the house. That number has since doubled, so we're stuck with the 7500. The router isn't the best, but I suspect our long term problems lie upstream. Is there anything that can be done? I live in a very rural area at the "end of the line", as in we are the last house that they offer service to (our neighbors can't get it). I've been told by the local tech that the "lines are old", which I don't doubt, but would that really explain the problems we've been having? Thanks for your time!

[Internet] Bad IPV6 Only Routing-Recent(Forced to route to Seattle, WA from CT)

Over the past week or so(not sure when it actually began) I noticed I was having higher than normal latency with IPV6 compared to IPV4. I shut off IPV6 on the things I use that have IPV6 and noticed the latency was back to what it normally was. I sure was surprised when someone gave me something to tracert to lol. I'm going all the way to Seattle from CT back to NYC lol. IPV4 is not affected and it does not appear that Google services are routing like this(they aren't taking the detour all the way to seattle). I'm probably the minority actually using Frontier IPV6 lol. I checked the Seattle hop and it does appear to actually be in Seattle(someone pointed out that my latency on the way back seemed a little low). I didn't really notice any issues, I just noticed the IPV6 latency randomly went up. Maybe there's some oddity going on? Anyone else recently started getting "failed to update headers" error on their Yahoo sub email account(s)? Have a sub email account (@sbcglobal.net) that in the past few days is generating a "failed to update headers" error message ever time Outlook 2010 accesses the account to receive email. Main @sbcglobal.net email account works fine, no errors. Not seeing anything in Googling that would point to this problem or a solution to it. Both main account and subaccount incoming/outgoing servers/ports the same.

[TV] VantageTV Firmware CT (Update 2.6) - New Look / Netflix Support

It appears that the Frontier VantageTV firmware(mediaroom 2.6) has been rolling out to a few customers in Connecticut this morning. I do not currently have it, but figured I would make this post in preparation of any posts. The main changes with the VantageTV firmware are *supposed* to be = - New VantageTV branding in the place of FrontierTV - Updated UI with a reddish coloring on the main menu - Netflix compatibility on your Frontier receiver(it's a TV app) - "Restart" which lets you watch a show from the beginning that is currently or has already aired. Not sure of the time limits, Bell sets it at 30 hours after it aired it seems. - "On Now Guide" - not exactly sure what it does, I guess it's just suggestions on what to watch that is currently airing. - "Recent Peak" lets you have a menu that drops down to let you quickly access the last 5 channels you have viewed. There seem to be a few other minor things that don't really seem worth mentioning. Please post if you receive this update and what model receiver you're using. Please mention if the Netflix feature is actually active or not yet. Not sure on what's going to happen to the plan names, if they'll change to from ex. FrontierTV Prime to VantageTV Prime. There doesn't seem to be any information about that at the moment. On a side note, the sub-channel "Antenna TV" is coming to Connecticut on April 22nd on channel 81 according to the message center. There aren't really any Frontier pictures/videos for this. The pictures in the user guide are blurry. Here are pictures from *Bell/Bell Aliant* that show the features for the first two pictures. Below them are the only Frontiers picture I could find that aren't bad quality. [att=1] [att=2] [att=4] [att=3]

Frontier asks for user reviews and hides all negative ones

As the title indicates, Frontier Communications is asking customers to provide reviews of their service. http://internet.frontier.com/reviews/ I left a very calm, short, polite, non-profane, review explaining my issues with the service, and that Frontier refuses to fix the problem. It hasn't shown up yet. I believe the webpage might be a sham. Almost all the reviews are from new customers with limited needs. Additionally, there is a portion of the page which reads, "FRONTIER INTERNET IS RATED 4.3 STARS/5 BASED ON 214 NEW CUSTOMER REVIEWS!" If you disagree, I would urge you to leave a review... As Frontier is literally asking for it.
