[Internet] Help me understand my speed test

Ok, for the longest time I feel that I've been having some speed issues on my home fiber line. This was happening before i swapped out my Frontier issued router and it's currently happening with my Netgear R6700v3 I have Frontier fiber 500/500Mbps. When I run a speed test on my FreeNAS system (hard wired of course)I get ~ half of my download speed (~225Mbps). FreeNAS is based on FreeBSD and there's really no gui except for a webgui. In order to run a speed test, I found a nice utility called speedtest-cli (https://github.com/sivel/speedtest-cli) I run the speed test at the command line with the following arguments: Using the --simple argument speedtest-cli --simple produces what I believe are excellent results of what my line really offers freenas[~]# speedtest-cli --simple Ping: 8.057 ms Download: 494.87 Mbit/s Upload: 441.68 Mbit/s Now when I used the --single argument (which i guess simulates a file transfer) i get this: @freenas[~]# speedtest-cli --single Retrieving speedtest.net configuration... Testing from Frontier Communications (47.xxx.xx.xx)... Retrieving speedtest.net server list... Selecting best server based on ping... Hosted by Whitesky Communications LLC (Los Angeles, CA) [21.08 km]: 6.723 ms Testing download speed................................................................................ Download: 265.90 Mbit/s Testing upload speed...................................................................................................... Upload: 14.79 Mbit/s These are the types of speeds i see when i download large files. Why do i get different speeds between the --simple and --single arguments? Here's the KEY for all of the arguments: optional arguments: -h, --help show this help message and exit --no-download Do not perform download test --no-upload Do not perform upload test --single Only use a single connection instead of multiple. This simulates a typical file transfer. --bytes Display values in bytes instead of bits. Does not affect the image generated by --share, nor output from --json or --csv --share Generate and provide a URL to the speedtest.net share results image, not displayed with --csv --simple Suppress verbose output, only show basic information --csv Suppress verbose output, only show basic information in CSV format. Speeds listed in bit/s and not affected by --bytes

Anyone else in 33570 Ruskin FL or near there been without internet since 6:25PM yesterday? Customer service just acknowledges the service is out, gives no ETA, says they are on site which I have not seen anyone where I think the fiber was cut during installation of large sewer pipes and not sure what to do. I work from home and have had to take off two days now with no end in sight.

Hi. I have Vantage FIOS in Connecticut. I just noticed I can only select 720p or 1080i on my Arris VIP2262 STB DVR. I expected 1080p setting. Is that not available at all, or just not with this STB? Is there another STB DVR I should request from them? Thanks for any help!

Phone support explained that i have too many network devices they affect to upload speed. Any suggestions? have this issue for a long time Thank you,

10 Gbps / XGS-PON

Let's use this thread for discussion around everything faster than 1 Gbps. Today, I had a technician attempt to install the FOX222 (XGS-PON) ONT at my residence in an attempt to fix a throughput issue with my gigabit service. He was unable to because my neighborhood was not setup to use XPON (an abbreviated term that Frontier is using for XGS-PON, apparently). He did tell me that others in my city had requested this ONT and that they were using it with their gigabit service. Frontier's most recent press releases have talked about being 10 Gbps ready. It is unclear if that is for business customers only or if residential will be included. The FOX222 ONT is an indoor-only ONT. Frontier must not have wanted to spend extra on the Nokia models that had the heatsink built-in. Here are some pictures.

DNS issues

Over the past couple of weeks I've noticed I've started seeing DNS issues on my network. Not seeing the issues if I stick with 8.8.8.8 but I had my Sonicwall TZ300W to use 1.1.1.1, 9.9.9.9 and 8.8.8.8. In testing prior to this issue, DNS performance was always better with 1.1.1.1 and 9.9.9.9 over Google's 8.8.8.8 plus it meant not giving Google more data about our household. Anyone else having or seen these kind of problems? 500/500 FTTP in the N Fort Worth area.

[FIOS] PNW - Latency/poor download numbers the last month

We currently use 25/25 Fios internet through Frontier and began experiencing latency/poor download numbers on January 24. I've run numerous speedtests during this time and the only number being impacted is the download. Drops as low as 1-2mbps during peak hours in the evening. Upload number is virtually not impacted at all. Rock solid 25-27 at all times. We've been through four tickets with Frontier, they've replaced our modem/router twice, replaced the main board in our ONT box, and still nothing. They frequently deny that there's anything wrong on their end, but I've read about the switch-over to Northwest and have my suspicions. Our service is borderline unusable some evenings. I downloaded and began using PingPlotter, so I can provide that sort of data if helps pinpoint an issue upstream somewhere. Just wondering if anyone in the Portland, OR and surrounding areas have similar symptoms.

FCC 214 application (PDF) link for the upcoming sale of Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington operations. https://bit.ly/33qJSw1 Not particularly riveting, but shows how the new company will be structured.

Has anyone notice the voicemail tab on the voicemail app is gone. You can not check your voicemail using the frontier voice mail app. Am I missing something? The little flag shows up on the app, but when you click on it, the app opens but doesn’t give the option like it use to.

That's not gonna happen anytime soon, is it? :'(

[Email] SMTP.Frontier.com blocking third party network IP address.

Task 'Frontier - xxxxxxx - Sending' reported error (0x800CCC6F) : 'Your outgoing (SMTP) e-mail server has reported an internal error. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP). The server responded: 554 5.7.1 : Client host rejected: Access denied' Using VPN to get onto the Frontier network it then works fine. I've posted in the Frontier direct forum. But in the meantime anyone else having trouble sending via SMTP.Frontier.com from third party networks? Or know of any relevant changes/issues etc. that may be going on?

[FIOS] Will Frontier installer fish 75+ feet of ethernet cable?

$

I have an existing install - one of VZ's first FiOS installs in the area (2008) - and just ordered an upgrade to 500. The current ONT runs everything on coax. The coax runs from the ground level of the house immediately inside, then runs within the interior walls to a closet on the third level of the house, where their router currently sits along with my switch, patch panel, and my router. I'd guess 75 feet or so. They're rolling an installer to replace the ONT for the new service. I know the 500 service requires ethernet from the new ONT. Will they really fish all that Ethernet cable internally up to where the switch/patch panel currently sit, or should I be ready for them to just drop it (and their new router) somewhere inconvenient on the ground floor and then we'll have to run yet another cable from there up to the switch/panel/my router? Or, worse yet, are they going to try to staple ethernet cable up the side of the house?

Frontier Unlimited Data

Do y'all think frontier will always be unlimited? It makes more more worried that there is more of a risk of data caps now that we have a new ceo, and new senior vice president. I know Dan Mcarthy hated data caps and said it was a business thing and not a network necessity, but he's no longer ceo. Makes me wonder what bernie han thinks of data caps. Do y'all think frontiers unlimited data is here to stay? If not, i'll be switching to my local provider who has unlimited data (but is very pricey)

Is anyone having any issues with cable cards lately? Mine has been unstable, losing tuners etc for the past few days randomly. Got a suggestion from another forum, rebooting ONT seems to have resolved it,

Hey all, am in CA , Upland area, Got this postcard , 39. $ for 500/500 I currently have coax along with available ethernet runs thru attic from outside where CableCo drops, one side of house to the other so that my switch and cable modem are on a UPS. The telco/FIOS access would be same place as the CableCo origin... does the FIOS modem have a battery ? I have a lan cable run so technically i can keep the modem outside, but would rather keep on the UPS

Customer service is a joke, cannot provision me to my old dslam port's 8mbit down after a physical repair, am being told i can only get (LOL) 1mbit, they cannot even figure out how to deal with grandfather plans over the telephone. Verizon ran a better ship than this clowncar parade.

Symmetrical 90 Mbits; DSL, Cable, or GPON?

I can’t tell online trying to order what kind of equipment is needed. Only that I’m required to rent a “router” for the first 12 months. Several plans are available. 6, 25, and 90 Mbit. But... if all are advertised symmetrical, then the 90 Mbit can’t be (V)DSL. Anyone know what kind of service it will be and what kind of modem is needed?

I have the chance to switch to Frontier fiber internet service at my home which speed wise is much faster symmetrically than my current ISP. But, considering the horrible reviews I read about it and the pending bankruptcy I'm more than a little concerned. Anyone have thoughts about their experiences?
