Frontier Netgear 7550 losing connection to internet and network.

Frontier just replaced an old 6100 with a 7550 and after hooking it up, it will work and hand out addresses via DHCP for about 5 minutes, but then the the internet light goes red and the computer can't even ping the modem. At this point dhcp renew gives me an APIPA address and doing a winsock reset and restarting the computer doesn't work either. I tried restarting the modem and at this time it doesn't even hand out an address via DHCP even though the internet light is on, I can't ping it, and then internet light goes red after about 5 minutes. What doesn't make sense is that the internet connection shouldn't have anything to do with the LAN and whether or not the router hands out DHCP addresses. It's like the modem locks up at that point and drops all network connectivity. Has anyone had a similar issue before? Any suggestions on where to start? I'm going to call Frontier when the next time I'm on location but I'd like to figure this out without going through the trouble of tech support as long as it's not something hardware related that can't be fixed by the configuration.
