I'm pretty much in the same boat as many in here. Rural area, Frontier is the only option, etc. I understand that distance, wire type, and congestion all impact my line speed, which gets pretty poor at times. I'll vary anywhere from 3mb to 0.8 mb down depending on time of day, etc.
I chatted online with Frontier Customer Service about my inconsistant speeds, they sent me to tech support. The tech support guy said my line was capable of up to 7mb speeds, and sent me back to Customer Support so I could upgrade my package to a higher tier. He also sent me a report on my line, which I can post here if it's helpful.
I get back to customer service, and they say their system only allows them to sell me 1.5mb service. I pushed back and said that the tech support guy told me that my line was capable of more, and their response was that the engineers set the caps. And I'm out of luck until the engineers say they can sell higher speeds. It's plausable to me that engineers set caps because of congestion, but I wanted to check with you guys since you know a lot more about this than I. If it's the way it is, I can accept it. But if I need to push back harder, I'd appreciate knowing that as well.
I have read some of the older threads with the same issues, but they are pretty much Greek to me once they get into the technical details. For example, I have no idea where my DSLAM is, or even how I would find that out. Short of calling Frontier. So I'd really appreciate someone helping me get my facts in order prior to escalating my request for higher speed to the area manager, etc.
