[DSL] Frontier disastrous routing/DNS

Frontier's notoriously shitty/flaky DNS servers probably won't come as news to anyone here, but I'm having issues loading what seems like a majority of websites even while on OpenDNS or Google DNS servers. I've been having trouble loading Amazon, dslreports, The Guardian, ubnt.com, Accuweather, and a slew of others for a couple days now. I changed some DNS settings in my Ubiquiti EdgeRouter X to no avail (my modem is in bridge mode). Then, suddenly, it dawned on me to try connecting to my VPN and then loading the problem sites mentioned above. Success. Although my traceroute to amazon.com shows similar results, the site itself loads fine on a VPN, still using OpenDNS, while I'd get page timeouts and unresponsive tab errors without the VPN. I attached two screenshots, one not going through the VPN and one routing through the VPN. Anyone have any insight into why Frontier's routing seems to be such a clusterfuck lately, especially since the Verizon asset takeover?
