[FiOS] home wired networking from ONT to rest of house

I have the ONT located out in my garage, and the frontier provided router is located in my living room. The ethernet cable from the ONT to the router has been run up through the attic and down the wall. Due to the sad pathetic wireless signal we're getting from the router, I want to be able to have all of the bedrooms (4) as well as the living room to be wired with it's own ethernet jack, and I kind of have an idea as to how to do it. The question is, do I need to use the westel router? Can i just swap in an 8 port router, assuming I can find one, and run the cats through out the house? Wireless networking is fine, but let's face it. The router blows when it comes to reliability, and often I'm finding that I'm losing my signal, even when my android phone or any of our wireless laptop is 3 feet away from the router. The signal strength tends to be around 50% and our smart tv tends to need to buffer while watching netflix.
